Before You Come
A few things regular visitors learn the first time. Read these and your day will go a lot smoother.
The Amish don’t work Sundays and most of the town follows. Come Friday or Saturday — that’s when everything is open and when our events happen. The Jamesport Tavern is the exception.
Plenty of shops here don’t take cards, and there’s no bank branch open late. Bring more cash than you think you need. The bakeries in particular are cash businesses.
Posted hours online are often wrong. Businesses close for family events, weather, and the seasons, sometimes without notice. A phone call the day before saves a wasted trip.
Restaurants close late afternoon or early evening. If you want a late dinner, plan on Trenton (12 miles) or Chillicothe (30 miles).
Please don’t photograph Amish people or take pictures of faces. Buggies, farmsteads, and the countryside are fine. If you’re unsure, ask — folks here are friendly about it.
Buggies travel these roads at about eight miles an hour and horses spook. Slow down early, pass wide, and don’t lay on the horn. On hills and curves, wait.
Jamesport sits in eastern Daviess County on Missouri Route 190, just south of Route 6. Gallatin is nine miles southwest, Trenton twelve miles northeast, Chillicothe about thirty. From Kansas City it's roughly ninety minutes up I-35.
There is one four-way stop in town and no traffic lights. Parking is free.
